On Friday 2nd February, Surrey Storm Netballer and Mintridge Ambassador, Georgia Lees travelled to Our Lady’s of Walsingham Catholic Primary School in Corby to deliver a Mintridge Bronze Programme.

Georgia was greeted by the whole school for the first stop of the day which was assembly. The Surrey Storm Wing Attack stood in front of the students and staff to share her sporting journey that began in year 6 and has continued to the age of 23 as she vice captains the Storm Super League squad. Georgia also spoke of the importance of health and exercise for everyone to take on board. At the end of the presentation, Georgia was asked some fantastic questions including:

“How many medals have you won?”

“What is your favourite part about playing netball?”

“What other sports do you enjoy?”

Some of the school’s budding netballers remained in the hall for the second part of the afternoon which was a coaching session led by Georgia. The session began with a dynamic warm up, enthusiastic smiles ran around the entire hall before moving on to a passing exercise. Georgia helped all the students think about the techniques of the various passes to increase power and accuracy. This was achieved before moving onto footwork.

Georgia explained how she always says “Ice…Cream…” as she lands with the ball. “Ice” is for the first foot that lands first and “Cream” is for the second foot to land. This helps her to think about which foot is able to move next. The netballing superstar encouraged everyone to come up with their own words to help them which included:

“Little…Mix…”

“Apple…Mac…”

Once the basic elements had been introduced, it was time for the group to move outside for the highly anticipated match play. There was end to end netball with Georgia encouraging the Our Lady’s students to think about spacing as a team. It was great to see so many of the players put Georgia’s top tips into practice.

As the session drew to a close, Georgia had an autograph card for everyone to take home with them, and there is always time for a photo session. We had a large group photo before everyone enjoyed time with the photo props on an individual basis! Georgia was incredibly impressed with the talent in all the students but there were two that particularly stood out that won a Mintridge prize each.

We are really looking forward to following the progress of the squad in your netball tournaments. Go well in your next matches.
