On Thursday 6th July, BMX World Champion Shanaze Reade embarked on her first journey as a Mintridge ambassador. Shanaze was invited to join the staff, students and parents in the wonderful setting of Harrogate Ladies’ College for their annual sports awards.

Upon arrival, Shanaze was whisked off to the marquee to enjoy a delicious supper as the Guest of Honour at the Awards. Shortly after, she was introduced to the room of guests before taking to the stage to present the many awards and prizes that the Harrogate Ladies’ students had achieved across the sporting year. It was fantastic to hear the many opportunities that have been available for the girls from tours and fixtures to extracurricular activities. Shanaze has since decided that she will be taking up lacrosse following hints and tips on the staff table!

Shanaze had prepared a short presentation for the girls, staff and parents hoping to inspire them to achieve anything that they set their mind to. She gave a little insight into the world of BMX which included a short video with Shanaze’s trick shots. The sport was quite new to a number in the audience and therefore everyone watched with intent. Shanaze soon moved onto the transition that she took into track cycling to compete alongside Victoria Pendleton to achieve world championship dominance. Growing up in a male dominated environment of BMX hasn’t held Shanaze back and she felt that nothing has got in her way on the road to success. She urged the girls in the room to have the same positive mindset in whatever path they choose.

Following an exciting raffle and the highly anticipated Heads & Tails game supporting the wonderful charity Women’s Sports Trust, the girls were able to enjoy photos and autographs with the Olympic star.

Thank you very much to the staff at Harrogate Ladies’ College for your hospitality throughout the evening, the Mintridge team thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and look forward to working with you again in the future.
