Juan Gonzalez Mendia
Sport: Rugby Union

Juan was born in Argentina where his love for sport manifested at a very young age. Throughout his childhood, Juan became accomplished at a variety of different sports, including hockey, swimming, horse riding, golf and cricket – however, specialising and prioritising rugby union throughout the later stages of his education. His prioritisation of rugby union allowed him to be fortunate enough to represent Argentina Schools at U16 and U18 age groups touring South Africa. Furthermore, at University he gained a scholarship as a student-athlete to complete his BA followed by a MSc in Sport Science and Physical Activity at the University of Idaho and UCLA, both in the United States of America. Consequently, he returned to his home country and worked in Buenos Aires at Northlands School and St George’s College. Juan also founded his sport consulting company at the age of 23 which he then sold before emigrating to New Zealand, securing a job for the Waikato Rugby Union and Hamilton Boys’ High School, one of the top rugby playing schools in the country. Since his arrival to the UK, he has worked as a School Master and Director of Sport at Sedbergh School, Sedbergh Prep and Stamford Endowed Schools and has completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education.

Juan is an RFU Level 3 UKCC and World Rugby Level 3 Coach who has coached rugby at every possible level, from grassroots to international standards. Juan has worked for Newcastle Falcons and is currently coaching at the Leicester Tigers Academy. Moreover, he has coached the North of England and has been part of the England coaching staff at U16 age group. In addition, he has consulted and coached the Lithuanian Rugby Federation, Brazilian Rugby Confederation and coached club and academy rugby in the United Arab Emirates.

Juan’s coaching career has recently turned towards professional and coach development. After several years of mentoring colleagues within their coaching pathways, he has become part of the Educational Workforce for the Rugby Football Union as an accredited Rugby Developer. His real passion is to work alongside enthusiastic practitioners in schools and clubs of all levels.

As of October 2016, Juan became the Community Manager at Leicester Tigers.
